The Mirror

By Maya Jewel

Exquisite joy
Sharp like a knife
Cuts into me
Breathless pain
Can you not hear it in my voice
Taste it on my lips?
Feel it in my touch?
Torn in two

Drawn to him by Destiny
He is my journey's end
My home
My mind's mate
My heart's passion is in his eyes
My spirit has shifted
Out of body
Out of place
Out of mind
Immersed in Love's rose scented waters
Torn in two
My heart lies in his breast

The man I love he is, oh so much
Sweet like honey
Strong like wind
Fresh like dew
I am lit by the light in his eyes
Every breath he takes is mine
Wrapped in his scent
His arms close my mind to world
My arms hold him close
And I can feel the beat of my own heart
He loves me he loves me not
Torn in two
My heart lies in his breast

I turn my head
My cheek against his heart

My gaze upon the moonlit mirror nearby
His is a dark form with glowing eyes
Do I see in his eyes his love, or mine?
It matters not
He loves me he loves me not
Torn in two
My heart lies in his breast
I cannot leave him and live

I clasp him more tightly
A chill voice beside, inside me,
"Shall I tell your fortune little girl"
No! I don't want to know
I withhold my gaze from his eyes
In the moonlit mirror
Withhold my gaze from their half-measured love
I love him so very much you know
Love him with exquisite pain
Love him with sharp joy
Torn in two
My heart lies in his breast
I cannot leave him and live
